Disarming Language: The Architecture of Deafness
In collaboration with deaf artist Christine Sun Kim and curator Niels Van Toome, The Architecture of Deafness was installed as part of "Disarming Language: Disability, Communication, Language” at the Tallinn Art Hall, on exhibition from December 12, 2019 to February 24, 2020. Using archival materials and original photographs of deaf schools, this exhibition explores a radical binary between the architecture of buildings that were designed by the “hearing” for the deaf—stylistically rigid and institutional—and those that were designed by deaf people or with the direct input of deaf users—innovative and user-centered—thus exposing a fundamental difference in mission.
