Taking Charge, an offshoot of Luz Portatil Brasil, has been kickstarted!
Taking Charge is focused on providing hands-on community workshops throughout the Rio Arapiuns region of the Brazilian Amazon. Led by Jeffrey Mansfield, Taking Charge workshops demonstrate an expanded set of uses for cell phone technology related to sustainable land management. Taking Charge will also document and celebrate local “best practices” of solar charging by community members who are using Luz Portatil kits in their sustainable forest enterprises. Taking Charge is envisioned as a participatory initiative with photos, maps and content created by -- and for -- people in the river communities. Taking Charge, as a participatory publication is a first-of-its-kind guide to solar power and light in the developing world and would serve as a model to help build a regional solar knowledge network along the Arapiuns and Tapajos Rivers.
